The motif shows an illustration of the battle at Vučji Do in 1876.
In Vučji Do, on the border of Montenegro and Herzegovina, the famous Battle of Vučedol took place, in which Herzegovinians and Montenegrins completely defeated the Turkish army. The Battle of Vučedol is one of the decisive battles in the liberation of Herzegovina and Montenegro from Turkish rule and one of the biggest battles in Serbian history.
Muktar Pasha had about 45,000 soldiers at his disposal, while the Montenegrin-Herzegovinian forces had about 14,000.
In a bayonet, hand-to-hand fight, the Turks did not have much of a chance. In a battle in which the knife and saber dominate with the Montenegrins and Herzegovinians, it was difficult for anyone to cope on the battlefield. In addition, a good number of Montenegrin elders carried modern Gasser revolvers with six bullets.
In the battle, the Turks had 4000 killed and wounded; among the dead, besides Selim Pasha, there were 3 miralaj (colonels), 3 lieutenant colonels and 168 junior officers; around 3,000 rifles, 21 flags, etc. were confiscated. Luka Filipov Dragišić from the Piper Battalion captured Divisional General Osman Pasha. Montenegrin-Herzegovinian losses were 70 killed and 118 wounded. A huge amount of war booty, guns, ammunition, cannons, war material, and a large number of Turkish war flags were confiscated.
Having started the war with a magnificent victory, the Montenegrins ranked Vučji Do among the greatest dates in the history of war against the Turks throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
The people sang:
"Oh bloody Vučji Do, the Serbs have always loved you!
Serbs love Turks swear, because their bones are rotting there!"
