The motif shows the Serbian eagle Krstaš, and in the background the damaged Krstaš banner flutters from Turkish bullets, the war banner from the battle of Vučje Dol, the decisive battle between the Turks on one side and the Montenegrins and Herzegovinans on the other, a battle that took place in 1876.
In the central part of the motif is Njegoš's testament church on Lovćen where Petar II Petrović Njegoš was buried.
The church-chapel dedicated to Saint Peter of Cetinje was built by Petar II Petrović Njegoš in 1845, according to his idea, with the wish to be buried there. Njegoš died in 1851, and was initially buried in the Cetinje Monastery, due to fears that the Turks might desecrate the grave. It was not until 1855 that his bones were transferred to Lovćen. The final demolition of the church-chapel by the communists took place in 1972, in order to free up space for the construction of the mausoleum in 1974.
