The motif shows the citizens of Herzegovina in an ambush at the time of the Nevesinska rifle in 1875.

Herzegovina got its name from the great Serbian duke Stefan Vukčić Kosača, who ruled the area in the middle of the 15th century. In 1448, he was crowned with the title of Herzeg of Saint Sava in the Mileševa Monastery. It is also known as the Duchy of Saint Sava, because this Serbian enlightener was the ruler of the Hum region, and then the organizer of the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Zahum-Herzegovina.
The Ottomans were the first to start calling that region Herzegovina, after its then ruler Herzeg Kosača. Herzegovina is a country that resisted the attacks of the Turks for a long time, and after the conquest they did not stop with uprisings and riots, the biggest uprising was the Nevesinska rifle, which was supposed to bring Herzegovina its final freedom and restoration of independence and then unification with other Serbian states.
